Simplifying Smart Home Automation Costings

Where to Start!

The first thing any client needs to do is choose a level that will fit your budget. While most clients have wish lists everyone has budgetary constraints, so first setting the budget is of utmost importance.

    Level 1: Whole House Lighting
  • Level 2: Whole House Audio (Distributed Audio)
  • Level 3: Whole House Video (Distributed Video)
  • Level 4: Security & Surveillance Automation
  • Level 5: Climate Automation
  • Level 6: Luxury and Comfort Automation

Each level typically costs between R 350.00 and R 1 000.00 per square meter from start to finish. As an example, lets suppose that your house is going to be 250m2. Working with this principle, if your house is, say for say, 250m2, then a Level 1 budget should around the R 87 500 mark. However, if you choose to do only key areas of the house, you will be adjusting the budget accordingly. In all building projects each trade accounts for an individual phase of the project pertaining to them. i.e. the architect   engineer are responsible for the Design phase, the Builder is responsible for Build phase, and the Interior Designer is responsible for the Finish/ Furnish stage. However, the unique part in what we do is we are responsible for the design, installation and finishing phase of the project.

A Comprehensive Turnkey Solution

We design according to your lifestyle; we install the complete infrastructure, including the wiring and we program the finished product. The most common mistake that people make is only looking at the various finish products prices such as televisions and speakers’ prices to determine their total budget. However, we recommend our customers spend more time giving careful thought to the design and engineering phase, to determine the right backbone for your system. The finish products like speakers and TV’s are easily changed or upgraded, but making the wrong choice as far as the backbone or base elements could be fatal and most cases the system then can’t be fixed.

An example of this is that you can always purchase a larger TV, with latest Smart technology, but if the existing wiring and switching can’t support the upgrade, then it will be a costly mistake to fix. That is why proper long term planning is the most important aspect of the project. Also, one rule of thumb to use; if your automation budget is less than your flooring per square meter, then chances are you do not have a well-designed system. Live Electronic Living specializes in design and installation of full home automation, home theatres, lighting control, and other integration. We have done many successful projects around the whole of South Africa.

Smart Home

Whole House Music

A typical home contains many technology systems. These may include whole house music, intercom, distributed video, networking, security, lighting and shading control, heating and cooling systems, cameras, pool and spa control, gate control, energy management, and more. A truly smart home ties all of these systems together into one seamless platform that is easily controlled by your smartphone or tablet.

Enjoy Your Music in Any Room of the House.

With Live Electronic Living, entertaining with whole house music systems is not only easier, it's more fun! Imagine being able to instantly create zones for different combinations of rooms, and control everything from your mobile device or a sleek panel on your wall. Operation of our whole house music systems is simple, with navigation easily learned by even a non-technical person in a matter of minutes. We’ve all pretty much learned how to navigate apps on our smartphones, so the interface for most of our music systems is very similar. You also don’t have to listen to the same thing throughout the entire house. Choose a source for each room if you like, and give multiple listeners the chance to enjoy different sources. What About the Wiring?

All those wires need to be hidden away!

If you're building a new home, it’s easy to run whatever wiring is necessary for a great whole house music system. But today’s options from Live Electronic Living work great in a finished home as well. Many of our technicians are simply wizards at running wiring to places that seemed impossible. In addition, systems like Denon HEOS support wireless -- all they need is a power outlet. We can help you plan out your whole house music system design so virtually everything is hidden! We can locate the equipment in a remote location. You can then place speakers inconspicuously on bookshelves, or in the walls or ceilings of your rooms, and use a keypad in the wall of each room or adjust the levels from your iPhone or iPad to control the system.

Home Networking

Planning for a High-Performance Network

The home network is quickly becoming the most important appliance in the home. This is due to the huge increase in streaming music and video services along with social media requiring constant connectivity. As consumers demand faster speeds, getting these speeds can be harder than you might expect in a larger home. For homes under 200m2 the device supplied by the internet service provider (ISP) is usually perfectly fine and provides fast coverage all of the entire home. With larger homes, things get more complicated as you need to add additional wireless access points (WAP) around the home. If the client has a large outdoor entertainment area, a weatherproof outdoor WAP becomes necessary.

Many clients will just change out to a faster device from their ISP and try to add it to their older network system and be disappointed. We see this happen a lot as the older, slower gear bogs down when it sees the much higher speeds and actually provides worse performance than it did with a slower connection. Planning for a high-performance network, capable of concurrent streaming services is critical to the best experience for the homeowner. Wireless access points require they be hard wired back to the main router and this should be done with CAT6 cable for best performance.

Remote Updates and Monitoring

Network Designed for Security Patches and Updates

As network security becomes more and more of a concern for clients, it is important to design a network where security patches and updates can be pushed out without the client having to do anything on their part. Some providers of consumer networks include this as part of their service to their clients. Patches can be pushed out remotely and these types of networks can also be remotely monitored. Another trend that is relatively new is the self-healing network. Everyone has probably experienced a network outage that was fixed by a "reboot" of the network equipment. The self-healing network has a device that checks the internet connection and if it fails, reboots the correct associated equipment in the correct order to restore the network. This can also usually be done remotely by the network provider and allows them to also reboot those cable boxes and streaming video boxes that lock up or freeze from time to time. In 2020 and into the future, the network will become a more critical part of the home.

Remote Firmware Updates etc

Providing a fast, stable, and secure network can be done, but does require some planning up front. At Live Electronic Living, we've recently launched our 24/7 Technology Concierge Platform LE4 to help your clients monitor, maintain and manage their home networks. This includes remote firmware updates, performance testing, remote reboot and troubleshooting. Contact Electronic Living today for more information!

Home Security

Smart Home Security

Live Electronic Living designs all of our systems, specifically to meet your personal security requirements. This includes creating zones of protection: defined areas covered by specific sensors and detectors. In the event of an alarm, having defined zones enables the system to communicate where the alarm is occurring as well as the type of alarm (i.e. intrusion or fire). Specially designed keypads make using advanced security technology simple.

Eyes Everywhere

Camera systems are features the homeowner who is looking for maximum-security coverage may consider. When choosing a camera system for your home, you’ll first have to decide if you want something that is just a toy or the real deal. Many budget priced camera systems available today give you the option of viewing your cameras on a smart phone, but they sacrifice what we feel is really important, and that’s the quality of the camera. In the event of someone trespassing on your property you’ll want to have as much picture detail later to try and identify the person or persons. You’ll only get this with a serious camera. When you consider a camera system we can help you understand the options which include multiple camera locations, night vision cameras, and the recording of all camera activity.

Security Controlled From Your Mobile Device

Our camera systems also have the ability to be able to be seen on your smart phone, iPad, Mac or PC. Higher-level security systems and camera systems interface with the Live Electronic Living Signature Series home control system. Live Electronic Living Security consultants are here to help you find the safety products it takes to make you and your family feel safe at home. Our experts can design the perfect system for your home using a combination of cameras, wireless, and conventional technology to make your home safe! Contact Us!

Lighting & Shading Control

Let us 'evolutionize' the Way You Manage Light in Your Home

In an average home, controlling your lights is all about flipping lots of switches. The lights in a room are either on or off. Depending on the time of day, however, the amount of natural light, and what activities you're going to be doing in the room, smart lighting can revolutionize the way you experience lighting. Lighting and shading control enable you to set the perfect amount of light at the touch of a button. These systems give you unprecedented control, provide a superior experience, and increase security in your home. When implemented correctly, they will turn off when you set your alarm and dim before you go to bed. As one of largest and most experienced residential lighting and shading dealers in Southern Africa Live Electronic Living can design, install, and program the perfect solution for you, regardless of the size and complexity of the system. If you're building a new home, we will work with you and your architect or builder to transform ordinary lighting into an elegant system that enhances your home’s beauty and gives you the freedom to easily set any mood you desire.

Form Meets Function

A well-designed lighting and shading control system gives you the ability to customize everything from individual rooms to whole-house scenes in an infinite number of ways. One touch on a master keypad, remote, or mobile app can dim lights for a soft romantic dinner while another can illuminate your entire home for entertaining. Store personalized settings into different scenes and set them manually with the push of a button or automatically using timers and sensors. An elegant all-in-one keypad eliminates the bank of switches you find in a typical home. Our dimmers, keypads, and shades all come in a variety of colours to match the decor of any home.

Safety & Security with Lighting Control

Safety and Security Benefits of Lighting and Shading Control

People often overlook the safety and security benefits of a lighting and shading control. Motion sensors, presets, and remote access mean you can create the illusion that your home is occupied, even while you’re away. If you arrive home to a dark house, you can use our car remote to turn on a pathway of lights in your driveway or at any door, creating a safe zone for you to enter the home without stumbling in the dark.

Energy Efficiency

Not only do lighting and shading systems provide convenience, beauty, and security, but they can also save you some money on your energy bill! By using shading and lighting in conjunction with one another, we are able to control both natural and artificial sources of light. This optimizes system performance by making the most of the daylight. A combination of dimmers, timers, sensors, and shades, programmed strategically, will reduce lighting use and conserve energy.
